Bucking Stereotypes and Representing Real Teens

YA authors have been fighting the mainstream definition of “normal” to reflect the way real teens, think, look, and feel since the 70’s when Judy Blume and Walter Dean Myers hit bookshelves with novels like Blubber and Hoops. But are we pushing hard enough to reflect the diversity of our readers? We’ve assembled a group of highly acclaimed YA authors to debate how far YA lit has come and how far we still need to go.

Comic Con International, San Diego
Saturday, July 11th, 1-2pm, Room 28DE
Diversity – We demand diverse books! Ethnic, religious, gender, racial, physical ability, and sexual diversity are underrepresented in science fiction and fantasy but these authors are here to tell you that their stories speak for themselves; they seek to create worlds similar to our own, where people from various walks of life are represented and cross paths. Readers will find these authors and the tales they spin as empowering and fascinating as ever. Join authors Soman Chainani (School for Good and Evil), Cece Bell (El Deafo), Cindy Pon (Serpentine), Mariko Tamaki (This One Summer), Scott Sigler (Alive), and Judd Winick (Hilo: The Boy Who Crashed to Earth) as they discuss diversity in Science Fiction and Fantasy with David Mariotte of Mysterious Galaxy!

Sunday, July 12th, 12-1pm, Room 32AB
Normalizing Comics and YA
Shonda Rhimes famously said that she’s not ‘diversifying’ TV, she’s normalizing it: “making it look like the world looks.” Join Sara Ryan (Bad Houses, Lambda Literary Emerging LGBTQ Writers Retreat instructor), Nicola Yoon (Everything Everything, We Need Diverse Books team member), Cindy Pon (Serpentine, We Need Diverse Books advisory committee, Diversity in YA co-founder), and Greg van Eekhout (California Bones, The Boy At The End Of The World) for a discussion and Q&A about how this normalizing is — and isn’t — happening, and what we can all do to promote inclusive storytelling.
